Supporting Early Careers in Construction (T-Level)
T‑level placements give us early access to emerging talent, diversify our workforce, and strengthen our long‑term talent pipeline. They blend technical classroom learning with meaningful industry experience, allowing students to contribute to real projects while developing skills the business genuinely needs. This creates a strong route into apprenticeships and future roles, helping address skills shortages in areas like the built environment.
We spoke to Noah Marriott, our Construction Trainee at Arc Partnership, to learn about his experience and the importance of T-level placements.
The business is supporting my learning in so many ways. The team I work in, and even the surrounding teams are always there to answer any questions I have - no matter how small. Everyone is really open and happy to help me understand different subjects. The flexibility has been a big help too. When I have needed time to revise or focus on my exams, the business has let me adjust my working hours so I can keep on top of everything. Danielle, as my mentor, also plays a huge part in supporting me. She really pushes me to try my hardest with tasks, which helps me grow and stops me from doubting myself. Having someone like that makes a massive difference and helps boost my confidence and further my development.
Honestly, I am enjoying so much about my placement. I get to work across a variety of academies and see different projects, including disposals of land. There is a nice mix between office work and going out on -site, which keeps things interesting and helps me understand how everything links together. I have met so many interesting people, and it has been great for building my network early on.
The work itself can be tricky at times. It really makes you think, which is a good thing, but it does mean you have to push yourself. Some tasks are complex, and that is where asking for support becomes really important. The placement overall has gone smoothly, but sometimes it is hard to connect directly what I am learning in college to what I am doing in the workplace, especially as I am learning about the world of work and what it takes to run a successful business.
I would definitely recommend a T‑Level placement. Even though they are still quite new, they offer such a good blend of classroom learning and real, hands‑on experience. It is a really practical way of learning, especially if you are not someone who wants to be in education full‑time. It gives you the best of both worlds, you develop skills in the workplace while still learning the theory behind it. I think more businesses should offer T‑level opportunities and have better understanding of what the qualification entails; this is because they help people become more specialised and career‑ready. For me, it is the perfect mix.
- Listen, watch and observe as much as you can. There’s so much you can learn just from paying attention to what your peers and mentors are doing.
- Take everything in, every bit of information helps you grow and develop as a professional.
- Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Use every opportunity to build your knowledge, because everything you learn now will shape your confidence later. The built environment is a great place to grow if you stay curious and open.
